I'm surprised that people still come here just to look at the art.
Though I'm probably going to still pay for another year, I took a week off of work since I'm also off of school for that same week to re-evaluate my artwork and comparing to some professionals my work is sub-par.
I'm not downgrading myself here, the truth of the matter is I need to retune my portfolio with some high quality art, not what I normally sketch, color, and post on here or on my comic.
I've wondered around the web forums of some real talented artists, how the made it to thier jobs either in videogames, film, television, or other media and while most of my assumptions were right on the money, there were some findings that I thought were interesting. There are actually people who broke into the industry with high quality 2D art, despite applying for 3D jobs. They stress the reality of artists learning the basics of 2D art such as color, paints, life drawing, poses, anatomy, art history, and while most classmates argue that it distracts from the course itself, I already realized that all these things help artists improve. It's rare 3D artists are good without 2D fundementals, I notice this more and more each class.
My work in 3D Max sucked and though I have gotten better the interface of that program is pitiful, the tools are there and despite the Art Institute showing us how to use them properly, I've relied more on tutorials to get by... I was worried that my efforts to learn 3D would be in vein until....
I've started to dig deep in Maya and in a week I've perfected a couple models that I'll be using for my portfolio. Maya compared to 3D Max more user freindly, not saying it's easy no no.. you have to learn how to navigate it's interface before getting into the good stuff. I've taken all what I learned in 3D Max from NURBS & box modeling, rigging, even the time consuming UV texturing and applied it in Maya and I was surprised the results work. Once you get past the different interface, Maya offers more tools at your finger tips rather than just finding it though Max's basic interface.
What's really surprising, is some companies use OTHER 3D software like Z Brush or Lightwave. The truth I learned over this that is it doesn't matter what you learn, since 3D tools can easily be replaced and you just have to take what you learn and apply it to a new software.
It's been a week and I have a bare model of a male and female character I'm going to put to use. Only thing I need to do is add clothes and hair, UV mapping, and rigging and there I will have a completed model in which I will post here. Other 3D works will consist of a monster, a cartoon character, a vehicle, and a few landscapes (I'm actually better at landscaping oddly enough). I'm going for high quality stuff now.
I have serveral goals to strive for, one being that I want to get this done before summer and the second is to get that realism look that American employers and gamers admire. First though I got a few traditional art works I want to get out of the way. I'm more fluent in traditional art right now, but the idea is to have a huge number if skills that show what I'm capable of.
My goal is to just be an artist, regardless of tratitional and 3D because I'll be lending my services to a company that requires it. Doesn't matter if it's videogames or television. This is where I need to stop procrastinating, put down the controller or remote and really get my feet wet. I've had enough fun for a while that I'm seeing how this can hurt my chances at a career.
There were serveral issues I have to overcome, sometimes I feel satisfied with a peice of work that I let it be and move on, then looking back I don't feel that satisfaction anymore. I want to shove 200% to each work. I also have the regret of being an anime fan, as it heavily influenced my art work and employers look down on this. I know all the flaws anime and manga have (like it being a bitch to model in 3D) and I try to drive from it, but I seem to revert back.
For the tradtional art peices I'm working on I'm going for a type of psuedo realism, applying different themes onto it.
Oh lord now I'm fired up. I don't want to dissapoint any of you, that is if anyone still watches me. Though that's my fault for not updating as often.
I may not be able to land on my feet with my own works like Penny Arcade or TMNT right away, but God dammit I have to finish this.
