The Comeback

2 min read
Wow... how is everyone doing?  It's been months since I've uploaded anything on here.  Look at all these messages, though pageviews didn't go up as much.  That's okay, there wasn't any activity.

I have my reasons though, I've been refining my art skills over and over again.  Sometimes I do illustrations and requests then suddenly get lazy and that hurts quality.  And looking at older works, I cringe at some of them, I can do better.  As for the internet, this website makes a great portfolio for art, even Udon posts their work here and they work for Capcom.   I'm sorry if I've abandoned a lot of you, many are gonna expect me to do Tifa art, but that part of me is long gone now.  I haven't done any real activity at the Crossover Comic Archive since our defunct RPG Maker project.

Beatrush Plus was going strong until I hit a snag, and realized my writing was not as good as I thought it would be, and the story dragged on longer than I wanted to.  And even each panel all I used was sketches to make a comic, and I feel pretty bad that it went so far.

So, probably the first thing I'll do to this site is take down all my art and start with a fresh clean state or maybe just open a second account and start over.  When that comes I'll have a link ready.

Though I have lots of good memories here, I'm going to try this again, and this time around it'll be more entertaining.

It's good to be back, I missed a lot of the interaction with you people, even if it was little.

I'm surprised that people still come here just to look at the art.

Though I'm probably going to still pay for another year, I took a week off of work since I'm also off of school for that same week to re-evaluate my artwork and comparing to some professionals my work is sub-par.

I'm not downgrading myself here, the truth of the matter is I need to retune my portfolio with some high quality art, not what I normally sketch, color, and post on here or on my comic.

I've wondered around the web forums of some real talented artists, how the made it to thier jobs either in videogames, film, television, or other media and while most of my assumptions were right on the money, there were some findings that I thought were interesting.  There are actually people who broke into the industry with high quality 2D art, despite applying for 3D jobs.  They stress the reality of artists learning the basics of 2D art such as color, paints, life drawing, poses, anatomy, art history, and while most classmates argue that it distracts from the course itself, I already realized that all these things help artists improve.  It's rare 3D artists are good without 2D fundementals, I notice this more and more each class.

My work in 3D Max sucked and though I have gotten better the interface of that program is pitiful, the tools are there and despite the Art Institute showing us how to use them properly, I've relied more on tutorials to get by...  I was worried that my efforts to learn 3D would be in vein until....

I've started to dig deep in Maya and in a week I've perfected a couple models that I'll be using for my portfolio.  Maya compared to 3D Max more user freindly, not saying it's easy no no.. you have to learn how to navigate it's interface before getting into the good stuff.  I've taken all what I learned in 3D Max from NURBS & box modeling,  rigging, even the time consuming UV texturing and applied it in Maya and I was surprised the results work.  Once you get past the different interface, Maya offers more tools at your finger tips rather than just finding it though Max's basic interface.

What's really surprising, is some companies use OTHER 3D software like Z Brush or Lightwave.  The truth I learned over this that is it doesn't matter what you learn, since 3D tools can easily be replaced and you just have to take what you learn and apply it to a new software.

It's been a week and I have a bare model of a male and female character I'm going to put to use.  Only thing I need to do is add clothes and hair, UV mapping, and rigging and there I will have a completed model in which I will post here.  Other 3D works will consist of a monster, a cartoon character, a vehicle, and a few landscapes (I'm actually better at landscaping oddly enough).  I'm going for high quality stuff now.

I have serveral goals to strive for, one being that I want to get this done before summer and the second is to get that realism look that American employers and gamers admire.  First though I got a few traditional art works I want to get out of the way.  I'm more fluent in traditional art right now, but the idea is to have a huge number if skills that show what I'm capable of.

My goal is to just be an artist, regardless of tratitional and 3D because I'll be lending my services to a company that requires it.  Doesn't matter if it's videogames or television.  This is where I need to stop procrastinating, put down the controller or remote and really get my feet wet.  I've had enough fun for a while that I'm seeing how this can hurt my chances at a career.

There were serveral issues I have to overcome, sometimes I feel satisfied with a peice of work that I let it be and move on, then looking back I don't feel that satisfaction anymore.  I want to shove 200% to each work.  I also have the regret of being an anime fan, as it heavily influenced my art work and employers look down on this.  I know all the flaws anime and manga have (like it being a bitch to model in 3D) and I try to drive from it, but I seem to revert back.

For the tradtional art peices I'm working on I'm going for a type of psuedo realism, applying different themes onto it.

Oh lord now I'm fired up.  I don't want to dissapoint any of you, that is if anyone still watches me.  Though that's my fault for not updating as often.

I may not be able to land on my feet with my own works like Penny Arcade or TMNT right away, but God dammit I have to finish this.

Got Maya 8 installed on my new notebook PC from Dell.

Laptop has a AMD Turion64 x2 Processor, Windows XP Professional (upgradeable to Vista), 100 gigs of space, 1.58 GHz, 2 GB of SD DDR Ram.

Maya ran so smooth on my first test run to explore the system... and yes, this Maya is the COMPLETE version.  Used my school discount to afford it nonetheless saving thousands.

Wow, so starting my winter break from the Art Institute, I'm going to work my way into the software and see how far I can get.  I have two weeks to do this.  And after that I'll set a few hours each week until I'm comfortable with it.

I have to use a notebook PC for traveling purposes, so I can take it with me to show others (employers and recruiters mainly) since my work in Max is not as good.  I'm sorry, but I see the folly of downloading software via torrents.  You get a cracked version and chances are you lose alot of valuable info, like tutorials and plugins so you can't use the software to its full potential.  That's the mistake I've learned with 3Ds Max.

Maya will be different, it's the software used my game and animation artists more than Max, and my best chance at landing a job after before and after graduation early 08'

Yeah, part time - 3/4 time college status.  That's why it's taking me so long.

I'm hoping to make so good 3D art to showcase here and to my online resume.

Boy this is going to be alot of work.

Though I'm not as much of a gamer like I was back during the PS1/N64 era...  I do have to keep up with the times for the career I'll land soon.

Speaking of which, I've purchased an Xbox 360 in hopes of playing some games that I wouldn't look at the first time, most of them are on the original Xbox console.  As many would be game industry empolyees already know (or should know) We won't all be working on the next Devil May Cry, or Soul Calibur, no no... we work to make Western games.  Xbox and PC games mainly with a few titles for other systems and handhelds.  Maybe, the few of us who are far more educated (and fluent in Japanese) will be able to help create games overseas but the reality is that it's not going to happen unless you're so determined to make it happen.

Sorry for drifting off here...

The only game I got for it is FFXI, and soon Sonic.  I'm not so keen on Dead Rising, Saint's Row, or Gears of War.  I'll have to rent them all to get a taste of each of them, otherwise I'm facing the truth that I've bought a really dull system.  I hate that feeling, the feeling that I've traded in 80% of my PS2 games, a Gamecube with 2 games and another $200 just to get a system that may not get some good titles.  It's already been out for a year, but I feel this system lacks killer app.  I can't force myself to be a FPS fan, and I know Halo fans will want to kill me for this but, I don't like Halo much.  I've played the first one at an old friends house, and that was it.

I'd have a PS3, but not at launch.  I don't think it would of been possible even if I preordered one and I don't DARE get myself ripped off on Ebay.  I compare game lists from both PS3 and 360 and I find myself compelled to get a PS3 because of game titles that I've grown fond of.  MGS, GTA, FF, Castlevania, DMC.  I think if history repeats itself the 360 will become another porting craze so companies can make more money.  It's always been that way.  PS gets the good games, third party companies make the decison to send games to other consoles.  Nintendo is able to stay in the game with first party titles, but only Zelda appeals to me and I don't even play that anymore.

Heh, what to do?  I'm going to have to wait out for a PS3 like I did with the PS2.  I bought mine right before it's $50 price drop so yeah, It'll be a solid year before I can get my hands on one even now I can afford it.

Well, I know I haven't submitted alot of art here lately.  I seriously need to.

Just don't get enough time to draw other than the weekly comic.  I would like to do some new works and play with some character designs a bit to see some reactions.

I could upload older pages of Beatrush Plus but I'm afraid it'll take traffic away from the main site.  Then again, the comic could use a bit of boost in reader base.

Maybe I should submit art requests here...

What are your thoughts?
